As we are approaching the end of 2019, we are sure that you are reflecting over the past 12 months and looking forward to the next year. Here at Communities In Schools of Puyallup, we are doing the same. We are thankful for an incredible year and are expectant for the great things to come in 2020. We invite you to join us in this important work that is being done to support at-risk students here in our community.
We can all look back on our childhoods and adolescence and recall those adult figures in our lives that not only shaped us but shaped our future. Whether it was a parent, a coach, a teacher, a counselor, or any number of roles, these were the adults that showed up in our lives and showed us that they cared.
This is the core of Communities In Schools—a caring adult. Beyond academic, attendance, or behavioral programs, our organization offers students an opportunity to have one of those crucial relationships with a caring adult. Because, ultimately, a bag of food or an hour of tutoring is going to have a much more profound impact on a student’s life when it comes from someone that they know cares deeply for them.
In 2019, we provided this opportunity to 485 students. This opportunity has real impacts on these students’ lives. Whether it is students receiving eye glasses when a Site Coordinator noticed that they, in fact, could read great when they could actually see the pages. Or, a student enrolling in a highly capable program after being in Good Samaritan Readers for two years. Finally, maybe it is a chronically absent student coming to school on time most days because there is someone there to say, “I am glad to see you today”.
The role of a caring adult is huge. It is these relationships that show students a glimpse into their own unending potential, the courage to believe that they have a bright future, and provides them with the firm foundation necessary to be move towards that future.
We hope that during this holiday season, you join us with financial support to continue making these differences in these children’s lives.
Happy Holidays,
Communities In Schools of Puyallup
